Datum:05.09.2010 - Rating: 1/5I read this book because it received raving reviews - I seriously wonder why. The plot is simple: A prostitute responds to the advertisement of a rich Wisconsin businessman who proposes marriage. She has ulterior motives (much more ulterior than can possibly be presumed) and marries Ralph Truitt. While the story unfolds, the reader is tortured with twisted and pseudo-literatic language, which to a large extent reveals the author's obsessions with sex. The book had all the opportunities to transport the reader into the bleak, depressing atmosphere of a life in 1907's America but the author obviously can't help himself and instead constantly descends into pornographic language. A real shame.

Catherine Land was a woman of the world so when lonely and wealthy Ralph Truitt in Wisconsin advertises for a reliable wife, she goes after it lock stock and barrel.
Catherine knows what she wants out of life and this will be an ideal opportunity to become wealthy if her plans are fulfilled.
She travels to Wisconsin by train on a wintry day disappointing Mr. Truitt who expected a different looking woman, and is not at all pleased. He shows and voices his discontentment while Catherine remains calm as they travel home.
It is on this journey to his home that an usual event takes place which will change their entire lives totally.
I write very simply in fear of giving too much of the plot away.
You will be amazed and you will be taken aback as passions stir and deep feelings are held in check. Consider this a very adult book.

Datum:04.08.2009 - Rating: 4/5Das Setting ist erst mal so ungewöhnlich nicht: ein einsamer Geschäfsmann aus den kalten Weiten der nördlichen USA gibt eine Kontaktanzeige auf. Nun steht er mitten in einem aufkommenden Blizzard und wartet auf die Ankuft seiner zukünftigen Ehefrau.
Dem verspäteten Zug entsteigt jedoch eine ganz andere Person als die auf dem Foto. Ralph Truitt ist mißtrauisch, mag sie aber auch nicht fortschicken. Auf dem Weg zu seinem Haus wird Ralph bei einem schweren Unfall ernsthaft verletzt, und Cathrine bekommt die Gelegenheit, sich zu beweisen. In der anschließenden Genesungszeit gewöhnt man sich aneinander, und es wird tatsächlich geheiratet.
Doch da nur selten alles ist wie es scheint, offenbaren sich dem Leser nach und nach die dunklen Flecken auf den Seelen der Protagonisten, die die Vergangenheit dort hinterlassen hat. Und die durchaus in die Gegenwart nachwirken.
Dies ist gleichzeitig ein stilles und spannungsgeladenes Buch. Irgendwann werde ich es wohl noch einmal lesen.
